Simon Oldfield presents Fragile Construct, Daniel Wallis’ first solo exhibition at the gallery.
Inspired by the poetic consequence of a space intervened, Wallis’ new body of work exhibits both power and poise. Finding a rhythm of organising and making things, Wallis’ works are often humorously disrupted by mischievous and animated interventions. Playing with weight, balance and implied function, Wallis has choreographed a body of work using modular systems and repeated motifs.
Dissecting the gallery to create an ‘active void’ using colour and form, Wallis presents a large scale installation; suspending lengths that span and tumble across the height and width of the gallery. Intricate and smaller sculptures jostle alongside larger works reflecting his diverse investigations; exploring infinite structural possibilities as evolved in nature.
Incorporating wood, plastic, paint and metal, Wallis takes basic elements and transforms them into constructions which question the tension between hidden strength and perceived fragility.
Wallis (born 1981) graduated from the Royal Academy Schools in 2007. Exhibitions include: Friendship of the Peoples, Simon Oldfield, June 2011 (group show); Modern Love at Simon Oldfield, 2010 (group show); Evolved Means at Allsopp Contemporary, London, 2008 (solo show); Superrefraction at Vulpes Vulpes, London, 2010 (group show); A Broken Fall at Josh Lilley, London, 2009; and Monster at Dazed & Confused, London 2008; ASP‐KRK‐RAS‐LDN at Wi snicz castle, Poland, 2006; 2005 Jerwood Drawing Prize, (touring show). Wallis’ work is held in important collections and has recently been acquired for exhibition at the Pollen Street Social, Mayfair.
